Externships and Graduate Work
Boulder Valley ICO offers externships to college and graduate students. We will also partner with graduate students working on dissertations relating to outdoor education.
Externships normally involve help with all aspects of the program, including:
1. Organizing and co-leading outings
3. Volunteer recruitment
4. Authoring and field-testing our youth leadership curriculum
5. Gear management and repair
6. Creating videos from our outings (for those with video editing skills/equipment/software)
The number of hours per week of volunteer work available is nearly unlimited, and weekly supervision/feedback is provided.
Outings normally occur on the weekends and/or over Boulder Valley School District holidays (though we also have regular outings on Friday afternoons). Though not essential, assistance on most outings is normally easiest when the extern has access to an insured vehicle that they can use to help us shuttle kids on the outing. All externs will have to successfully pass a standard social-criminal background screening. Only those who also pass a driving record check would be allowed to drive youth on outings.
To get started, please complete the volunteer application found on the Volunteer page. Read the whole page, and start an account on this website, as directed therein. Then contact Michael at [email protected] to schedule a meeting where we can develop a workplan for your externship and sign any paperwork that your school requires. You can, of course, contact Michael at any time with questions you may have.
Tips for Prospective Externs:
Because we do not have offices, regular communication with your supervisor by email or phone is important.
We encourage you to seek peer review of written work product before it is submitted for review. We can often pair you with another extern if that would be helpful in securing peer review
Our program runs all year long, so externs are encouraged to continue volunteering with us beyond the end of their formal externship.
Graduate-level work normally focuses on study and analysis of outings and program outcomes. To discuss how Boulder ICO may be able to support your graduate-level work please contact Michael at [email protected]. Note that our most active outing seasons are spring, summer, and fall, so those considering outing study/survey should anticipate greater opportunity during those seasons.
