Snow Caves & Snow Ice Cream
We enjoyed a perfect day for snowshoeing - lots of snow, warm sun, and best of all, no wind. The one-mile trail to Beaver Bog took us over a low ridge with some views of the Divide and a few snowshoe hare tracks. Once at the bog, our trekkers set to work building a quinzhee, first piling snow up in a 5-foot pile, then digging entrances in from the side. We took a break for hot chocolate and snacks and then completed the excavation. The diggers found that creating three entrances sped the work up considerably. And then they found that a snow cave with more hole than wall isn't very stable, when it collapsed just before we left.
We'll snowshoe to Beaver Bog where we'll build snow caves, have snow ice cream, and have a backwards snowshoe race.
