Trip Description:

As you pass through the iconic landscape on the approach to the Needles District, you’ll feel like you’re on a western movie set because you are on a western movie set.  Dozens of films have been made here. You may decide to introduce the kids to U2’s The Joshua Tree because the music fits this place perfectly. And you’ll dream beneath the desert sky under a million stars - Canyonlands has some of the darkest night sky in the lower 48.

The Canyonlands trip is back for 2019. We’ll drive out to Utah on Friday, pass through Moab and continue on to Canyonlands where we’ll car camp for the night.  On Saturday, we’ll split into two smaller backpacking groups. We’ll backpack for 2.5 days, 2 nights visiting spectacular places like Chesler Park and the Joint Trail. These trails are fun, scenic, and purpose-built for hiking. There are some challenging sections and hills, medical help is a long ways off, and you’ll need to focus on water and staying hydrated. On Monday morning we hike out, regroup for a picnic lunch, and start the drive back to Boulder.

This trip takes place over a mini-spring break of BVSD parent-teacher conferences.  April is usually one of the best times to visit Canyonlands, and this year should be great given the ample snowpack to feed the springs of Canyonlands and the lush vegetation of Chesler Park.  This is a rippin' great trip for our art & journaling, and photography academies. The Sierra Club @Casey meetings will talk about the geology of this area in preparation for this trip.

Due to permit restrictions and the special nature of this incredible place, the group size for this trip is strictly limited to 10 youth and 4 adults.  Two of the adult spots are reserved for certified leaders. Please sign up to volunteer today if you are interested and committed to joining us.

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for youth particpiants and volunteers on the Tuesday afternoon before the trip.  This trip sometimes has more interested people than spaces available.  Returning a signed permission slip and attending the meeting is the best way for youth to secure a spot on the trip.
