Outdoor Leadership Training for Boulder & Longmont ICO Teams

This Outdoor Leadership Training 101 & 201 course meets the outdoor leadership training requirements for outings leader certification (both for ICO and general Sierra Club Outings). The course also meets the annual training requirement (for certified outings leaders) for Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention. The course costs $35 (which includes meals, lodging, and materials). Those who complete outings leader certification and organize at least two outings in 2018 or 2019 can request refund of this cost. Scholarships for others may be available. This course explains what you need to know to organize and lead an outing for Boulder Valley ICO. We will cover Sierra Club ICO policies, the procedures used by Boulder Valley ICO to manage outing approval and expense reimbursement, and techniques for successful outing development, planning, and group management. 

This training is required for outings leader certification, but it is useful to any ICO volunteer who would like to better understand how our program works and what they can do to play a larger role in outings leadership and other aspects of program management.

The training will take place at Cal-Wood in Jamestown, Colorado. Lodging in the Cal-Wood cabins is encouraged but not required; those who commute from home should plan to arrive at Cal-Wood by 9 a.m. each day. We will attempt to arrange carpooling from Boulder for those who are interested.

This is a great opportunity to meet and hang out with other new program volunteers and our program leadership. If the weather is cooperative, we may also do a bit of fishing in the Cal-Wood pond (which is loaded with rainbow trout), using this as an introduction to tenkara, the minimalist form of fly fishing that we do on many of our outings. No fishing license is required to fish the Cal-Wood pond.
